Welcome To Miami Beach emergency Medicine
We are your EM clerkship team!
Emergency Medicine is such an exciting, humbling, and rewarding field, and we would love the opportunity to have you share this experience with us! We work hard to make every moment of this rotation worth it, hearing from students time and time again that it’s one of the best rotations of medical school. We’d love to show you what it’s all about.
We are an extremely busy department that deals with a diverse range of patient presentations, which provide rich opportunities for education. Students will care for patients with common ER presentations, such as STEMI, stroke, acute surgical abdomen, and orthopedic injuries, as well as unique presentations specific to Miami Beach, including toxic ingestions, psychiatric emergencies, ocean-related injuries, and patients from diverse global locations. Your learning experience in the ED will be hands-on, involving procedures, bedside ultrasounds, cardiac arrests, and more.
At Mount Sinai EM, we place a strong emphasis on work-life balance and strive to show you how easily it can be achieved in the field of EM. We understand the importance of having time for studying, reflection, and enjoying South Beach, which is why we allow our students to create their own schedule with a baseline of only 12 shifts per month. As the ED can be overwhelming initially, we pair you with one resident per shift who will provide guidance on presentations, note writing, procedures, and more. Additionally, you will have 2 one-on-one shifts with an attending physician, providing ample opportunity for interaction with our team.
In addition to your 12 shifts, your experience is supplemented with exciting educational opportunities throughout the month. A favorite amongst many is Sinai SIM Day, a hands-on training event in our simulation lab, lead by the Clerkship Director (Dr. Warren) and the Assistant Program Director / SIM Director (Dr. Golden). Each Wednesday, our EM faculty, residents, and students come together for EM conference where we participate in a variety of educational modalities including mini lectures, Tox-bites, Peds-bites, Trauma-bites, small groups, simulation, oral/written board review, journal club, asynchronous learning, games, morbidity and mortality, and many more. We also provide student-only lectures on a weekly basis, provided by our core faculty and senior residents. We like to keep education fun and have no doubt you will have fun, and learn a lot, throughout the month with us!
Prior to your rotation, we will email you to introduce ourselves further and provide you with detailed rotation information, including reading materials and how to fill in your schedule online. Our team is excited to have the opportunity to get to know you, teach you emergency medicine, and show you that not only is EM the best career option, but also that our program is one of the best out there! If you have any questions, please email us at msmcemstudents@gmail.com.
students’ Reviews
“I loved the experience at Mount Sinai and am deeply grateful I had the chance to rotate here. The staff is kind, the location is beautiful, and the experience was indispensable. Thank you for challenging me, supporting me, and making me a better medical student.”
“Even as a medical student, I got to do many procedures (I&D, US guided IV, stapling, suturing, pelvic exams, FAST exams, etc).”
“I was always welcomed and encouraged to perform procedures as well. The SIM days were also very helpful and I really enjoyed the sessions and the teaching that went into them. I felt like the SIM sessions did a good job of teaching us a couple of pieces of very applicable information that we could take away without completely overwhelming us. Overall great experience!!”
“I was allowed enough responsibility where I felt challenged and able to learn, but not an amount that exceeded what I could handle to the point of being overwhelmed. Overall, I had a really awesome experience and have nothing but great things to say about the program.”
“I loved the fact that we were able to make our own schedules; as medical students we often don't have much flexibility in our schedules, so this was a nice change and really appreciated.”
“It really did feel like a tight knit family. Everyone clearly showed how happy they were to be there and it was contagious.”
“I loved how every conference there was a moment to acknowledge successful procedures, experiences, and provide words of encouragement. That’s a culture I want to be a part of!”
“I appreciate how willing all of the residents, interns to seniors, were to involve me in the shift. I felt engaged and a part of the team.”
“This rotation was one of my best rotations. I truly enjoyed the attendings, residents, and staff. Everyone was super friendly and helpful.”
“The teaching sessions were awesome and the conferences had many applicable topics especially the ones with the mock cases where the attendings took us through how to work up the case to completion. Overall very good EM experience.”
“They are good about getting students involved and letting us help with procedures”
“I liked how residents asked for my input on patients, allowed me to come up with an A&P and trusted me”
